The Suite Pop Up Gallery opening soiree will take place tomorrow (Tuesday 14 September) from 5-7pm at 108 Oriental Parade. This event also celebrates the current exhibition, a medley of Bruce Connew's recent works, and not-so-recent, curated by Mealnie Moreau. The opening will be supported by ZUMWOHL and Vista Cafe will be open to handle any overflow.

"In parallel with Ans Westra & Jonathan Campbell’s exhibition Capture showing at Suite Fine Art Gallery in Newtown (until 2 October 2010), Suite Pop Up Gallery presents a selection of works by Bruce Connew that will be hung in two groups over the next two weeks.

"The first show, Karma Police, presents a selection from his latest bodies of works: I Saw You (2006-07), Censored (2008) and I Must Behave (2009). The second show, The Way We Live Now, will feature works from Connew's Muttonbirds - part of a story (2002-3), South Africa (1985) and Beyond the Pale (1981/86) series.

"Away from his iconic photo-essays, the works in the first show are a radical departure from Connew’s social realist documentary style. The techniques and style are different, colours have been introduced, subjects and locations are uncertain and the message unclear. But this is not a disengagement from Connew, rather a reflection on his social documentary practice, and the dilemmas facing documentary photography today; within its different forms and aesthetics, and in regard to globalization and saturated media societies.

"Connew’s motivation today has not changed, and his interest still lies within the political and social issues of contemporary experiences. I Saw You and I Must Behave are the first two in a series of three projects each exploring a particular social/political theme: I Saw You is about surveillance, while I Must Behave examines control, from simple self-restraint to government manipulation, and how it modifies behavior. Censored is a political triptych from the re-contextualization of pages from National Geographic.

"In contrast to his earlier works, the images from these series do not give themselves away as easily and speak of a more personal approach. They convey a sense of disconnection and perhaps emotional anxiety, intentionally resisting any interpretation and/or meaning. By re-contextualizing those isolated incidents, both mundane and monumental, Connew reminds us of the social and political issues present within everyday life."

The Notman show ends tomorrow. I think I can say without exception that everyone who has visited the gallery since we opened has enjoyed Geoffrey's paintings. His next body of work will be shown in May next year at Suite Fine Art Gallery in Newtown. The works are all oil on canvas paintings - some bigger and some smaller than the paintings on hardboard that we have exhibited to date.

The next exhibition at Suite Pop Up Gallery is our first ever exhibition of works by artist and photographer Bruce Connew. Curated by Melanie Moreau, the exhibition will include works from several series, which will be hung in two groups over the next two weeks. A solo exhibition and book launch for his new series I Drive You Crazy, to the Moon, the final in his trilogy of 'I' books/exhibitions, is scheduled for March 2011 at Suite Fine Art Gallery in Newtown.

Another nice day in the capital. Thanks everyone for their well wishes and visiting.

A highlight of the week was going back-to-back at Martin Bosley's on Monday and Tuesday. To thank Nicky for her help with the Sygroves and with Susannah on our wedding anniversary.

The Geoffrey Notman paintings on show are proving popular with visitors. These are the last photo-real paintings that Geoffrey may ever produce. His next body of work are paintings on canvas, and he is making several smaller works.

We are 99% set up at 108 Oriental Parade and have welcomed a number of visitors and neighbors over the last two days. Guy Robinson shot some photographs for us last night (below) and we met Martin Bosley today over lunch. His Wellington on a Plate menu is very good value and delicious, especially the octopus starter.

In the beginning

It's been 21 days since we started discussions with Chris & Robyn Sygrove to rent their garage at 108 Oriental Parade. Previously the site where 42 Below vodka got it's start, the space has been completely renovated with a glass store front, angled walls and a new lighting system to showcase artworks day and night.

The suggestion for the name 'pop up gallery' came from Emma McLeary at Ideas Shop following the trend started by fashion house Comme des Garçons in 2004, and the fit out was undertaken by Elliot Corliesen. Temporary by it's nature, this, our first pop up gallery, will allow us to supplement exhibitions on at our Newtown gallery and host projects that we wouldn't ordinarily be able to host.

The first works on show at Suite Pop Up Gallery are six paintings by Geoffrey Notman. His images are detailed, fact loaded studies of the New Zealand landscape that manage to capture a sense of place, time and season.

Suite Pop Up Gallery will open for the first time tomorrow, Sunday 22 August. The weather is not forecast to be great but there's plenty of unpacking to finish and the stereo to set up. We're looking forward to being part of the Oriental Bay community, and enjoying the sunny spring and summer days ahead.
